On the use of Polite Expressions Beyond the Four walls of the Classroom

The grade 1 students can identify the polite expressions that one should use in various situations. The oral activities went well like the role playing and recitation. They had difficulty when the skill required is for them to write these polite expressions as response to a note or letter. Not because they tend to forget but because most of them are still challenged in the skill of writing, penmanship and spelling wise. Another point that I am looking at is how they use this in real situations which I get to observe during break time, in my advisory class. The use of CAN instead of MAY in asking permission is mostly practiced which I wish the other advisers can correct. The reinforcement ideally should not happen during their Language period because of course, during this time, they are aware that they have to use this expressions correctly plus the fact that I and Ms. Marian are there to correct them. The golden opportunities actually to reinforce the use of these expressions are during break times when they are as their true selves, with the adviser. I just hope that we could ask for the support of the other teachers in reinforcing the use of polite expressions. Another golden opportunity is when they are at home, with their families and I just hope the parents are supportive of this.
