On the Ground

On Challenges
As a language teacher for several years and as having been a second language learner. I have always noticed that one of the most interesting lessons to teach in grade 1 is “Common Action Words”. Whys is this so? Because from the word itself, “action” and considering what kids of this age level love to do…..ACTIONS!
Kids this age simply just love to act and move. Nothing can be more interesting than making them move around and leave their seats for at least a little while so I crafted my lesson involving a lot of movements by them. The only challenge that I always know I will encounter is giving a balance between having fun and learning the lesson. This lesson requires the teacher’s classroom management prowess to not defeat the two purposes.
The Ladder
To plan my lesson on action words, I referred first to the K-12 English Curriculum Guide and see the objectives that should be realized by Filipino learners in this lesson. According to the Guide, code EN1G-IVa-e-3.4 the objective is to recognize common action words in stories listened to. I added also the objective to explain the importance of verbs in writing a complete sentences and coded it as DLSZEN1-G-1e -1.1. These are the tasks that I made the students perform:
TASK 1 – Building the Schema
To introduce a lesson, it is important that the students’ prior knowledge of the subject be on check. This is for the teacher to have an idea regarding the number of meetings that may be spent for the lesson. The teacher may also take note of the number of students who already seem to know about the lesson and who has zero knowledge. This will also guide the teacher in constructing sentences for the sentences should be based on the schema of the children.
Ask the students if they have an idea about action words and if they know one, ask them to give examples. Let them follow the dance along video. In this link : “Shake and Freeze“ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=388Q44ReOWE
TASK 2 – Breaking it Gently
After checking on their schema, I presented the important concepts that they have to remember about verbs through power point presentation.
Discuss the concepts about action words via power point presentation
TASK 3- Story Telling
To add an element of excitement, I picked a story with a lot of action words in it. The students were asked to clap their hands whenever they hear an action word. To appreciate the story, I read it to them first without asking them to do the task of clapping first. Clapping was done the second time I read the story.
Story Telling- The students will identify the action words in the story
TASK 4- Chant in Action
To find out their conclusion about action words in the end, the grade one pupils were asked to give meaning to the phrase action words based on the tasks they did for the day in the form of chanting.Group the students and let them make a chant that begins with the line “I know some action songs…” In this chant, they need to be able to give examples and demonstrate common action words. Their chant should end with the line “Action words are words that show ….”
TASK 5- Integrating Values
As a Lasallian, it is of course important to always integrate values to the lesson.
VALUING: Why do we always need to think before we act?
TASK 6
CLOSURE: They will present their chant in front of their classmates.
TASK 7 – Playing Games
Play the game Simon says with the following challenging commands:
Simon says draw with your feet.
Simon says lift your feet up as high as you can.
Simon says play air guitar
Simon says kiss your tummy
Simon says waddle like a penguin
Ask them to identify the verbs afterwards
TASK 8- Sentence Patterns
The students will now be given examples of sentences using verbs. They will be tasked to construct sentences following the given patterns.
TASK 9- Say it with Comic Strips
Answering a seatwork: a worksheet with comic strips with blank speech bubbles will be completed with dialogue by the students.
TASK 10- Show and Tell
They will be pre assigned to bring a picture of any of their family members. They will be tasked to show it in the class and tell the class about the things that this family member usually does.
TASK 11
Valuing: Acts of Kindness
The students will discuss in the class some acts of kindness which they have been doing
TASK 12
CLOSURE
A Note for you!
Students will write a note to their classmate describing the concept of the lesson they learned.
At the Top
Being able to prepare, the execution of the planned lesson has been easy. Understanding on the part of the grade one learners went smoothly as shown by how they responded on each activity presented to them. Providing illustrations and kinesthetic activities like dancing made them learn about verbs the fun way. They enjoyed the videos that were presented to them. Exercises accompanying the discussion were varied covering the four major skills in language learning (listening, speaking, reading and writing).
Looking back
The students’ assessment results about the topic verbs is my basis on how well did my strategies in teaching the lesson worked.
In the assessment, the students are expected to identify the verbs in the sentences. The assessment results revealed that students found it easy to distinguish verbs from other words in the sentences. They were also able to successfully construct sentences using verbs in appropriate context. They had a little bit difficulty answering the understanding question where , based from the texts given, they are expected to explain the use of verbs or what verbs tell.
Conclusions and Recommendations
-
It is easy for the grade one students to identify common verbs in the sentences.
-
Verbs should be discussed in a very lively manner. Activities like singing and dancing help for them to understand the concept of verbs better.
