For a Reading teacher whose aim is to make the students comprehend what they read, I believe that ( to facilitate the part of the child’s brain that is bound to process the information) presenting guide questions is a must. Not only that, the way the teacher presents the guide questions also matters. Guide questions should be presented with such enthusiasm that the students will realize that this is important. That there is something that is yet to be discovered. Presenting the guide questions help the teacher set a goal or target. It gives the students a sense of direction. This is as important as enumerating the objectives of the day and making mention of the essential questions.
This is not different from making the kids watch a video. Guide questions should also be presented. That is why it is frustrating to know that in some cases, some teachers just go straight to making the kids watch. No questions to guide them. Going on without guide questions is being unfair to the kids in a way that they are not being given a sense of purpose for having to watch a certain video.
Teachers should realize that giving guide questions can make it a lot easier for the teacher to discuss what was watched. I consider this a golden opportunity for a teacher to let the Reading Teacher in him/ her shine.
This is when I say that there must always be a reading teacher in every subject teacher.
